Locals gathered on Saturday for a fundraiser to help the Monterey Park community heal and rebuild following a mass shooting that left 11 people dead on Jan. 21.It’s been a difficult and traumatizing few months following the tragedy that unfolded at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio for both residents and authorities in the tight-knit community.A barbeque fundraiser held by the Monterey Park Fire Department hopes to raise funds to help those most affected by the deadly shooting.“It’s been a long process for our whole membership, especially the people that responded that night, on both the fire department and our law enforcement side,” said Captain Adam Malouf of the Monterey Park Fire Department. “We feel we need to stand with the community and bring everybody together and help heal.”Michael Ta, a Monterey Park resident, is still shaken from that night.“You see all these things happen on TV and you don’t think it’s going to happen here where you live and this really hit home,” said Ta. ...

From the San Jose Sharks’ perspective, there was nowhere to go but up after they were throttled by the Vancouver Canucks earlier this week. Now as they return to San Jose, that’s also true from an NHL standings standpoint. The Sharks had a one-goal lead in the second period Saturday but allowed three straight to the Calgary Flames in what became a 5-3 loss at the Saddledome, marking San Jose’s ninth consecutive defeat as it ended a three-game road trip.Logan Couture, Nico Sturm, and Martin Kaut all scored and Erik Karlsson had two assists as the Sharks fell to 19-39-15, with their .363 points percentage ranking as the worst in the NHL.Still, Saturday’s performance was markedly better than the one they gave Thursday when the Sharks barely showed up in what became a 7-2 loss to the Canucks.“What we talked about (Friday) is you can’t quit,” Sharks coach David Quinn said after Saturday’s game. “That’s probably the biggest insult you can any athlete. We’ve got to continue to pl...

BEIJING (AP) — Honduras has cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the Latin American country announced Saturday, saying it recognizes “only one China in the world.”The announcement by Honduras’s foreign ministry posted on Twitter, and also reported by China’s CCTV, comes amid rising tensions between Beijing and the United States, including over China’s increasing assertiveness toward self-ruled Taiwan. The move leaves Taiwan recognized by only 13 sovereign states.“The government of the Republic of Honduras recognizes the existence of only one China in the world and that the government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government that represents all of China,” the ministry statement said.It added that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory, and as of today, the Honduran government has informed Taiwan the severance of diplomatic relations, pledging not to have any official relationship or contact with Taiwan.”Honduras is the ninth diplomatic ally t...
