CORONA, Calif. (AP) — A giant mural that students painted on a California dam for the U.S. bicentennial in 1976 is being recreated after years of controversy over a decision to remove the original.Workers following the original design began painting the new mural on the spillway of Prado Dam this month, Southern California News Group reported. The dam is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood control project on the Santa Ana River, about 36 miles (58 kilometers) east of downtown Los Angeles. More than 40 years ago, high school students from the nearby city of Corona used the dam to salute the nation’s bicentennial, painting the phrase “200 YEARS OF FREEDOM,” a Liberty Bell silhouette, and the dates “1776-1976.”The mural became a landmark but it suffered from weathering and graffiti, and the Corps announced it would be removed due to lead in the original paint. That led to a lawsuit and a failed effort to have it listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the origi...

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday insisted that France’s dispatch of a frigate to Taiwan showed its commitment to regional security, but doubled down on his remarks that France would not act as a “vassal” by following U.S. hardliners into a conflict over the democratic island. “Being allies doesn’t mean being vassals … Just because we are allies, just because we do things together that we decide to do, doesn’t mean that we don’t have the right to think on our own and that we will follow the most extreme people in a country that is allied with us,” Macron said during a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on a visit to the Netherlands. “When we look at the facts, France has no lessons to learn from anyone, not in the Ukrainian theater, nor the Sahel theater, nor the Taiwan theater,” Macron said. His comments come after he told POLITICO and the French newspaper Les Echos that ...

NEW YORK (AP) — Expecting a tax refund? It could be smaller than last year. And with inflation still high, that money won’t go as far as it did a year ago.The 90 million taxpayers who have filed as of March 31 got refunds that were an average of nearly 10% less than last year, in part due to pandemic relief programs expiring. The filing deadline for most taxpayers is Tuesday. The average refund is $2,910, down from $3,226, a difference of more than $300, according to the most recent IRS data. For many households, especially working families, the tax refund is the biggest one-time financial windfall of the year, said Kathy Pickering, chief tax officer of H&R Block.“We know that working families in general are the most cash-strapped,” she said, adding that the expanded earned income tax and child tax credits during the COVID pandemic provided a lot of benefits for families with children. The child tax credit, for example, is reverting to $2,0...
