Former President of the European Commission Jacques Delors, who has died at the age of 98, is rightly remembered as a true architect of European integration. He even succeeded for a time in tackling the project’s biggest flaw, British Euroscepticism. The Mayor of Merthyr sat on a bench next to his French counterpart, who disappeared straight after kick-off and did not return until it was time to present the trophies. The Mayor of Clichy told his somewhat offended guest that he had been on the telephone, trying to resolve his country’s financial crisis. In France, it was perfectly normal for Jacques Delors to secure his local power base by serving as mayor when h...Wood burning temporarily banned in these Southern California counties

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have finalized their 12-year deal with right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, teaming the prized free agent with Shohei Ohtani in their prolific winter spending spree. The Dodgers didn’t disclose the value of the deal they announced Wednesday, but several media reports have tagged it at $325 million. That would be the largest and longest contract ever guaranteed to a major league pitcher. The 25-year-old Yamamoto has been Japan’s most dominant pitcher over the past few seasons, and he was coveted by teams across the majors after he elected to leave the Orix Buffaloes this offseason. The big-budget, pitching-poor Dodgers landed him with another mammoth December deal after signing two-way AL MVP Ohtani to a $700 million contract and signing right-hander Tyler Glasnow to a $136.5 million, five-year deal after his acquisition from Tampa Bay.“I’d like to thank everyone in the Orix organization, the Dodger organization and all the people clos...Madueke’s late penalty hands Chelsea 2-1 win over Crystal Palace for a rare home victory

LONDON (AP) — Substitute Noni Madueke bailed out a misfiring Chelsea side with a late penalty to secure a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday for a rare home victory in 2023. Just as it looked like Chelsea’s inefficiency up front would cost it again, Madueke was tripped by Eberechi Eze inside the area and stepped up to the spot himself to send goalkeeper Dean Henderson the wrong way in the 89th minute. It secured just a sixth home league win of the calendar year for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which used to be a fortress under Jose Mourinho and several managers after him but has been anything but under Mauricio Pochettino and his three most recent predecessors from last season. Chelsea has not found any kind of consistency under Pochettino, who was forced to name the club’s youngest-ever starting lineup for a Premier League game following a slew of injuries and suspensions. The hosts started well, though, as they largely dominated the first hal...Latest news
