Patrick Chung was just beginning his senior year of high school in 2001 when the terrorist attacks of 9/11 shaped his career path.Chung, now a battalion chief with the San Jose Fire Department, said he had always been interested in the fire service but started to think harder about it after witnessing the “incredibly stoic and honorable” actions of firefighters after the attacks.“That was a really impactful event that happened during a time period of my life where you’re a little more impressionable,” he added.Chung has made an impression in his 16 years with the San Jose Fire Department, moving from firefighter/EMT to fire captain to his current role as the EMS battalion chief, with responsibility for anything in the department that relates to emergency medical response.Chung’s accomplishments are also significant in light of a statistical analysis by job search website Zippia that shows only 1.8% of the approximately 138,819 firefighters employed in the United States as of last Se...

(KTXL) — Over 170 years later, the Gold Rush still isn't over for some Northern California residents. Gold was first discovered in 1848, leading to the California Gold Rush and changing the course of the state and igniting the growth of the West Coast, according to the Library of Congress. All these years later, you can still find people panning for gold.“There’s clubs locally in the area,” Laura Fierro told Nexstar's KTXL. “There’s prospector clubs that get together and do some panning and prospecting as well.” Fierro is involved with gold panning groups in the Sacramento area called River City Prospectors and the Lady Explorers, Adventurers and Prospectors, the latter being an all women-club. Fierro has had a long interest in gold panning, but didn’t take it seriously as a hobby until five years ago.  La Niña is officially over, NOAA announces: What does that mean? Trump’s Last Defense Secretary Has Regrets — but Not About Jan. 6

When bureaucrats get big promotions, they tend to receive congratulations from their friends, but after Christopher Miller landed the biggest job of his life, his wife and some of his colleagues were horrified. It was November 9, 2020, the day President Donald Trump fired his secretary of defense, Mark Esper. It was widely assumed that Trump would install an acolyte who would do whatever was needed to help the defeated president stay in power. Esper, just days before, had confided to a journalist, “Who’s going to come in behind me? It’s going to be a real yes man. And then God help us.”Trump appointed Miller, an unknown whose rise was so far-fetched that the secretary of the Army, Ryan McCarthy, had to Google his new boss to figure out who he was. Wikipedia was useless because at the time, Miller didn’t merit an entry. After retiring from the Army as a Special Forces colonel in 2014, Miller moved from one mid-level job to another in Washington, D.C., a nobody in a city of somebodies. ...
